Utagawa Toyokuni

Utagawa Toyokuni, often called Toyokuni I to distinguish him from later artists of the Utagawa school, was a master of ukiyo-e, best known for his dynamic kabuki actor prints. As the second head of the Utagawa school, he played a pivotal role in elevating it to prominence, establishing its dominance in Japanese woodblock printing throughout the 19th century.
