Toyohara Kunichika

Kunichika’s bold compositions and striking color contrasts set his work apart, blending Edo-period ukiyo-e traditions with the Meiji era’s cultural changes. Despite personal struggles with debt and alcoholism, his passion for theater and printmaking remained strong. Once overlooked in the West, his work is now celebrated as a key achievement of this transitional period, cementing his legacy as one of the last great ukiyo-e masters.
